NASA Astronaut to Speak on PSU Campus

Portland State is excited to welcome NASA astronaut Ron Garan to campus on Monday as he presents, "The Orbital Perspective on Global Challenges."

Ron is a highly decorated fighter pilot and test pilot, explorer, entrepreneur and humanitarian who believes that appropriately designed and targeted social enterprise and philanthropy can solve many of the problems facing our world.

As a NASA astronaut Ron traveled 71,075,867 miles orbiting our planet. As an aquanaut he spent 18 continuous days living and working on the ocean floor. He also recently served a six-month mission of scientific research and exploration aboard the International Space Station.

Today, Ron is dedicated to global mass collaboration and citizen science programs, including NASA's Open Innovation Initiative, which seeks to increase openness, transparency, collaboration, and innovation within government.

Ron is also a serial entrepreneur having founded or co-founded multiple business enterprises and social-impact focused startups. His ventures include Manna Energy Foundation, which was powered by Ron's belief in the positive impact that renewable energy can have on the alleviation of poverty, the protection of the environment, and improvement of global security. The Foundation's sister organization, Manna Energy Limited, was the first organization in the world to successfully leverage the $120 billion-a-year United Nations carbon market for drinking water treatment in developing countries.

Please join us in welcoming Ron to campus for what promises to be a fascinating discussion on sustainabilty and social innovation.

When: This Monday - April 22, 2013, 4:30pm

Where: Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, 1930 SW 4th Ave, Room EB 103

In the meantime, you can find out more about Ron's "orbital perspective" by visiting Fragile Oasis, a grassroots initiative that connects the shared perspective of astronauts from different countries and cultures with people back on Earth. The website features numerous posts from Ron, including this cool video of his recent T-38 jet training flight over the Gulf of Mexico.
