The MBA Hub
LinkedIn recently recognized Portland State University in a blog post about the million-plus LinkedIn members who have included the "Volunteer & Causes" section in their professional profile. LinkedIn pointed to PSU as among the top institutions for these LinkedIn "do-gooders" ("Top Colleges and Universities They Attend").
Volunteerism and fostering strong communities is definitely a focus among many of our MBA students. While in the program, they have numerous opportunities to get involved in events, organizations and resources focused on social innovation, social entrepreneurship and building community.
Some examples we've covered before include PSU's Impact Entrepreneurs, which explores the power of business for social impact. Impact Entrepreneurs is a network of individuals and organizations committed to fostering economic, social, and ecological prosperity through entrepreneurial action. One of its key programs is the Social Innovation Incubator, which provides social venture startups with one-on-one consulting, access to advisors, and discounts on services and events.
Portland State is also home to the The Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS), which advances sustainability research, education, and outreach to empower the university to be a powerful catalyst and model for a more equitable, ecologically balanced, and economically vibrant future.
MBA students focused on building stronger communities through sustainability can also get involved with the campus Net Impact chapter, which offers events, resources, education, networking opportunities, and career connections.
To see some examples of MBA alumni putting their commitment to community in action, take a look at recent profiles on Anita Ramachandran (MBA '07, now working for Mercy Corps) and Jason Kallingal (MBA '12, now working in affordable housing for ROSE Community Development).
Another profile you may be interested in is our story about Kylene Fickenscher (MBA '10). She successfully leveraged her MBA degree to pursue her passion for sustainability and food systems — starting the program as a sales rep, she later graduated as a sustainability analyst for Ecova.
