Alaska Airlines Magazine highlighted Portland's thriving startup scene, and Portland State University's Business Accelerator, in its October issue.
The PSU Business Accelerator is home to 30+ startup companies in technology, bioscience, and cleantech. Together, they have raised more private angel and venture capital the last three years than any other location in Oregon. It's located just south of downtown Portland between the Portland State University district and South Waterfront.
The Business Accelerator speeds the success of these high-growth companies by providing resources, connections, expertise, University support, and control of high-impact costs, all within a growth-focused entrepreneurial community. Data shows that companies growing in this type of environment are four times more likely to succeed.
PSU Business Accelerator Director Angela Jackson was quoted in the article, saying that the PSU team picks companies for their potential to create jobs, attract federal grants and venture capital, and grow revenues as they develop a product. The program takes no equity stake in the startups, but companies do pay rent.
She says startups evolve and morph into far better ideas over time. “We look for people who want to not just embrace that change, but also anticipate it. And that’s not everybody.”
